Juanita Proffitt, Director of Bands

Proffitt Juanita

Juanita Proffitt begins her first year as director of the Blue Wave Show Band. She earned a bachelor of music education degree from Mississippi State University and a master of music education degree from the University of Alabama. She previously served the assistant band director for two years.

She directs the jazz band, prepares the horn line for the Blue Wave Show Band, teaches all applied brass and woodwind private lessons, assists with concert band, and teaches music appreciation and music theory.

In addition to her duties at Co-Lin, she serves as a resource and support to the local community band directors and students. Her prior teaching experience includes middle school, high school and the university level. She plays the trombone in several ensembles and is in demand as a performer.

Proffit is a member of the Mississippi Bandmasters Association, past president of the Capital District Band Directors Association, founding member of the “49ers Small Band Association,” and past member of the East Central Band Directors Association.

She was selected to Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers, Teacher of the Month, McLaurin High School, and President’s Scholar at Mississippi State University.

Proffit has published works including “76 Trombones” The Mississippi Bandmaster (November 2005) and“Band Director Resources” The Mississippi Bandmaster (April 2004).

  

Dr. Jason Mathena, Assistant Director of BandsMathena Jason

Dr. Jason Mathena begins his first year as assistant director of bands after previously holding the same position at Southwest Mississippi Community College. He is also an instructor in music theory, music appreciation, and percussion. 

Dr. Mathena received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Auburn University, his Master’s in Percussion Performance from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, and his Doctorate at the University of Southern Mississippi. 

An avid percussionist, Dr. Mathena performs with The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, The Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra, and The Meridian Symphony Orchestra. He is in high demand as a performer and clinician throughout the region.

 
 
 
 
Dr. Shelley Smith, Colette and Color Guard Director

Dr. Shelley Smith serves as the Blue Wave Show Band’s Colette and Color Guard Director. Smith is in her 13th year as the director of the Colettes. 

A Co-Lin graduate, she received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, a Master’s Degree in Quantitative Chemistry from Mississippi College, and a Doctoral Degree in Computational Chemistry from Jackson State University.

Dr. Smith has completed research in polymer science at the University of Southern Mississippi and presented her research at over a dozen local, regional, and national chemistry conferences and symposiums. She is beginning her first year as a science instructor at Mississippi College after previously serving in the same position for 12 years at Co-Lin.

A vocalist, flutist, and pianist, Smith plays piano for Topeka Baptist Church and has played and sang in several worship groups and bands.
