Wolves defeat East Central and fall to Gulf Coast

WESSON – In possibly the toughest stretch of the 2017 season the Co-Lin netters defeated East Central 6-3 on Wednesday in Decatur, but fell to Gulf Coast 5-4 in a hard fought match in front of a very supportive home crowd.

“I feel like our guys are peaking at the right time,” said Co-Lin head coach Blake Smith. “State tournament is two weeks away and the guys are making a strong push for a top three finish.”

At East Central Sebastian Osorio and Juan Pablo Pinilla rolled passed Tom Langelear and Will Wooten 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Tripp Case and Cory Alderman fell at No. 2 doubles 8-6 to ECCC’s Will Stewart and John Jimenez. Hayes Thompson and Cole Moak paired for No. 3 doubles and lost 8-3 to Brandon Rogers and Will Wooten.

Osorio defeated Langelear 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Pinilla out lasted Jimenez 6-4, 6-4 in singles. Thompson played No. 3 singles for the Wolves and defeated Joseph Jabour 7-5, 6-1. Case defeated Wooten at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-0, while Alderman overcame Rogers 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 at No. 5. Moak rounded out singles play at No. 6 but fell 6-1, 6-0 to Graham Murphee.

“Our men played a great match against a really strong Gulf Coast team even though we came up just short,” said Smith. “We won three singles courts that we lost the first time we played them, so we are definitely improving.”

Osorio and Pinilla picked up the Wolves first win at No. 1 doubles after defeating Travis Bell and John Murphy 8-3. Case and Alderman lost a heartbreaking match at No. 2 doubles to Noah Tippen and Noah Rowell 9-8 (8-6). Thompson and Moak fell at No. 3 to MGCCC’s Reid Cudd and Brett Bowen 6-0, 6-2.

In singles play Osorio defeated bell 6-3, 6-4, while Pinilla breezed passed Murphy 6-1, 6-3. Thompson fell at No. 3 singles 6-2, 7-5 to Tippen. Case surpassed Rowell at No. 4 singles 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), and Alderman fell to Cudd 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. Moak lost to Bowen at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-2.
