Wolves Sweep Doubleheader Against Indians

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned home to Sullivan Field for their next MACCC contest hosting Itawamba on Friday, March 28. The Wolves swept the Indians as they took game one, 11-0, in seven innings, and then earned a come-from-behind win, 9-5, in game two.
GAME ONE
The first game of the doubleheader was scoreless until the Wolves plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) drew a one-out walk to get the offense going. Reise Thomas (Florence) then followed with a double while Griffin looked to score on the play, but was called out at home. Tucker Jones (Brandon) then stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a two-run home run giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead.
The Wolves then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth as Evan Holifield (Stringer) started the inning off by reaching base on an error. Sam Cook (Shubuta) was then hit-by-pitch while Caleb Brooks (Brandon) then singled to load the bases with no outs. Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) then hit the first of three RBI singles as Brady White (Ethel) and Griffin followed scoring Holifield, Cook, and Brooks respectively to push the lead to 5-0. Thomas then followed with a two-RBI double scoring Hanlon and White while Jones and Trey Davidson (Brandon) followed with back-to-back RBI singles scoring Griffin and Thomas to increase the lead to 9-0.
The Wolves scored their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth as White drew a leadoff walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Griffin. Later in the inning, Jones and Davidson were hit-by-pitch to load the bases with two outs while Holifield then delivered a two-RBI single scoring White and Jones to make the lead, 11-0.
The Indians were then retired in order in the top of the seventh to secure the 11-0 game one victory for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled 11 hits as each member of the lineup got at least one hit with Reise Thomas and Tucker Jones leading the way with two hits each. Trey Davidson, Evan Holifield, Sam Cook, Caleb Brooks, Bradley Hanlon, Brady White, and Avery Griffin had one hit apiece. Jones led the Wolves in RBIs with three while Thomas and Holifield had two RBIs apiece with Davidson, Hanlon, White, and Griffin adding one RBI each.
Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) improved to 1-2 with the complete game win allowing one hit with three walks and three strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Indians jump ahead of the Wolves with four runs in the top of the first highlighted by a three-run home run. However, the Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning as Reise Thomas hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Later in the inning, Evan Holifield singled while Sam Cook drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Caleb Brooks then delivered a two-RBI single scoring Thomas and Holifield to cut the lead down to 4-2.
The Wolves then cut into the lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth as Bradley Hanlon led off the inning being hit-by-pitch. Later in the inning, Avery Griffin singled while Thomas was hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one out. Hanlon then scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead down to 4-3 while a groundout ended the inning before the Wolves could plate the tying run.
The Wolves then had their second big inning of the doubleheader as they exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead as Cook and Brooks hit back-to-back singles to put two runners on with one out. After Hanlon drew a walk to load the bases, White tied the game with an RBI-single scoring Gavin Bledsoe (Brandon) who was brought in as a runner for Cook. Griffin then drew a walk scoring Brooks and giving the Wolves a 5-4 lead. Thomas then hit a two-RBI single scoring White and Hanlon while Griffin scored on a sacrifice fly by Jones to push the Wolves lead to 8-4. Davidson then hit an RBI single scoring Thomas to push the lead to 9-4.
The Indians then scored a run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead down to 9-5; however, the Wolves retired the Indians in order in the top of the seventh to secure the game two win and sweep.
The Wolves totaled 12 hits as a team with Reise Thomas and Caleb Brooks leading the way with three hits apiece while Brady White had two hits with Trey Davidson, Evan Holifield, Sam Cook, and Avery Griffin adding one hit each. Thomas, Jones, and Brooks led the Wolves in RBIs with two apiece while Davidson, White, and Griffin had one RBI each.
Dee Morgan (Tallulah, LA) got the start for the Wolves and earned a no-decision while pitching one inning and allowing four runs, all earned, on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Carter Leggett (Laurel) pitched three innings of scoreless relief while allowing two hits with one walk and one strikeout while Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) picked up the win (2-1) in relief while two innings of hitless relief and allowing one earned run with five walks and three strikeouts. Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) pitched one inning of relief retiring all three batters he faced with two strikeouts.
Co-Lin improves to 23-14 overall, 7-5 in MACCC play, and will hit the road to face off against Jones on Tuesday, April 1. First pitch between the Wolves and the No. 10 Bobcats is set for 3 p.m., at Community Bank Park in Ellisville.
