Wolves Split Final Road Doubleheader
RAYMOND – The Co-Lin Baseball team hit the road for the final time in the regular season to face off against Hinds on Thursday, April 24. The Wolves and Eagles split the doubleheader as the Wolves took game one, 11-1, while the Eagles took game two, 9-6.
GAME ONE
The Wolves got on the board first in game one with a pair of runs in the top of the second as Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) reached base on an error with two outs to extend the inning. Sam Cook (Shubuta) drew a walk while Evan Holifield (Stringer) was hit-by-pitch to load the bases for the Wolves. Brady White (Ethel) then delivered a two-out, two-RBI double scoring Harrington and Cook and giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles then cut the lead in half with a single run in the bottom of the second making the score, 2-1. The Wolves responded with a single run in the top of third as Trey Davidson (Brandon) hit a leadoff single while Harrington followed by drawing a walk to put two runners on with no outs. Later in the inning, both runners stole bases to get into scoring position while Davidson then scored on an RBI groundout by Holifield increasing the lead to 3-1.
The Wolves then doubled their scored with three runs in the top of the fourth as Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) and Reise Thomas (Florence) hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. After both runners stole into scoring position, Hanlon scored on a wild pitch making the score, 4-1. Later in the inning, Tucker Jones (Brandon) stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, extending the lead to 6-1.
The final five runs of the game came in the top of the eighth as Thomas started off the scoring by crushing a 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field for a solo home run with one out, his sixth of the season, increasing the lead to 7-1. Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) then hit a single, took second on a passed ball, advanced to third on an error, and then scored on an RBI single by Jones making the score, 8-1. Jones then scored on an RBI-double by Davidson while Harrington then drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. Later in the inning, Holifield singled to load the bases with two outs while White then hit a two-RBI double scoring Davidson and Harrington making the score, 11-1.
The Eagles then got two runners on with two outs, while a fielder's choice ended the game and secured the 11-1 victory for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled 13 hits as Trey Davidson led the way with three hits while Tucker Jones, Brady White, Reise Thomas, and Avery Griffin had two hits apiece with Evan Holifield and Bradley Hanlon adding one hit each. White led the Wolves in RBIs with four, while Jones had three with Davidson, Holifield, and Thomas adding one RBI each.
Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) got the start and improved to 6-5 with the win while pitching six innings and allowing one earned run on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Dee Morgan (Tallulah, LA) pitched two innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits with one walk and one strikeout.
GAME TWO
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Eagles jump ahead of the Wolves with four runs in each of the first and second innings to take an 8-0 lead over the Wolves.
The Wolves then scored three runs in the top as Trey Davidson and Lucas Harrington hit back-to-back singles to start the inning and put two runners on. Later in the inning, Brady White singled to load the bases with one out for the Wolves. Evan Holifield then cleared the bases with a three-RBI double scoring Davidson, Harrington, and White making the score, 8-3.
The Wolves then added three runs in the top of the fifth as Harrington led off the inning by reaching on an error while Caleb Brooks (Brandon) then singled to put two runners on with no outs. Harrington then scored on an RBI-double by White while Brooks then scored on a wild pitch making the score, 8-5. Later in the inning, Bradley Hanlon extended the inning by drawing a walk to put two runners on with two outs. The Wolves then pulled off a double steal as White stole home while Hanlon swiped second making the score, 8-6.
The Eagles then added a run in the bottom of the sixth to increase the lead to 9-6 while White then drew a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh. However, the Wolves then went strikeout, fly out, strikeout to end the game and seal a game two win for the Eagles and split of the day.
The Wolves totaled ten hits as Trey Davidson, Lucas Harrington, Brady White, and Evan Holifield had two hits apiece while Caleb Brooks and Bradley Hanlon had one hit each. Holifield led the Wolves in RBIs with three while White had one RBI.
Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) got the start and fell to 8-4 overall while pitching 1.1 innings and allowing six runs, five earned on five hits with two strikeouts. Lucas Harrington pitched four innings of relief while allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts while Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) pitched 0.2 innings of relief with one strikeout.
Co-Lin is now 28-22 overall, 12-12 in MACCC play, and will return home for their next doubleheader hosting Mississippi Delta on Saturday, April 26. The Wolves will celebrate Sophomore Day before their games against the Trojans with first pitch set for 2 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
