WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action hosting Delgado on Sunday, February 8 and then hit the road for two more on Tuesday, February 10. It was a tale of two vastly different games on Sunday as the Wolves came away with a sweep taking game one, 12-2, and walking off game two, 6-5. The teams split the contests on Tuesday with the Wolves earning a come-from-behind win, 6-4, in game one and the Dolphins taking game two, 3-2.
GAME ONE
The Wolves got the scoring started early as they plated a solo run in the top of the first as Bryson Jones (Brandon) hit a leadoff bunt single, but was later thrown out trying to steal second. Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) then drew a walk while Trey Davidson singled to put two runners with one out. Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) then hit an RBI-single scoring Griffin to give the Wolves and early 1-0 lead.
The Dolphins then responded with a solo home run in the top of the second to tie the game. However, the Wolves responded with an eight-run explosion in the bottom half to take the lead as Jacob Chancelor (Brandon) hit a leadoff single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brady White (Ethel). Chancelor then scored on an RBI-triple by Evan Holifield (Stringer) who then scored on an RBI-double by Jones giving the Wolves a 3-1 lead. Griffin then delivered by hitting an inside-the-park home run scoring Jones and increasing the lead to 5-1. Davidson then smashed a pitch over the centerfield fence for a solo home run making the score, 6-1. Hanlon then singled to keep the offense rolling and took second on a wild pitch. After a single by Donovan Moore (Roxie), John Mark Grissom crushed a ball over the fence in left field for a three-run home run increasing the lead to 9-1.
The Dolphins then added their second run of the game on a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning cutting the lead down to 9-2. The Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom half as Davidson and Hanlon hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Davidson then scored on a third straight single by Moore increasing the lead to 10-2. Later in the inning, Chancelor hit an RBI-single scoring Hanlon while White reached on a fielder's choice scoring Moore and making the lead, 12-2.
The Wolves then held the Dolphins off the board in the top of the fifth to secure the 12-2 run-rule victory.
The Wolves totaled 15 hits as Trey Davidson and Bradley Hanlon both went 3-for-3 while Bryson Jones, Donovan Moore, and Jacob Chancelor had two hits apiece with Avery Griffin, John Mark Grissom, and Evan Holifield added one hit each. Grissom led the team in RBIs with three while Griffin had two with Jones, Davidson, Hanlon, Moore, Chancelor, Holifield, and Brady White adding one RBI each.
Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) got his first win of the season in his first start with 3.1 innings pitched allowing two earned runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. MT Breland (Columbia) pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit with one strikeout while Ty Blakeney (Taylorsville) pitched one inning of scoreless relief with one walk.
GAME TWO
The Dolphins jumped ahead of the Wolves early with a pair of runs in the top of the first making the score, 2-0. The Wolves looked to respond in the bottom of the first as Bryson Jones was hit-by-pitch, but then was thrown out trying to steal second. Avery Griffin then drew a walk, but was later picked off to end the inning with no scoring done.
The Wolves then looked to get on the board in the third inning as Hayes Hebert (Lafayette, LA) drew a walk and then later advanced to third on a double by Jones; however, a groundout ended the inning with no scoring. The Dolphins extended their lead with a single run in the fourth and two in the fifth making the score, 5-0.
The Wolves came alive in the sixth inning as they scored three runs as Griffin drew a leadoff walk to get the offense going. Trey Davidson then singled as Griffin advanced to second while Bradley Hanlon then hit a second straight single scoring Griffin and cutting the lead down to 5-1. Later in the inning, Hanlon scored on an RBI-double by John Mark Grissom who then scored on a second-straight RBI-double by Bryan Travis (Gulfport) making the score, 5-3.
After the Dolphins were held scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Wolves came up to bat in the bottom half needing three to win. Jones started the inning with a triple while Griffin then drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs. Davidson then delivered an RBI-single scoring Jones while Griffin then scored on an RBI single by Hanlon to tie the game at 5-5. After Donovan Moore was intentionally walked to load the bases, Grissom punched a ball over the outfielder's heads scoring Davidson and securing the walk-off win, 6-5, and sweep for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled 11 hits as Davidson led the way going 3-for-4 at the plate while Bryson Jones, Bradley Hanlon, and John Mark Grissom had two hits apiece with Bryan Travis and Evan Holifield adding one hit each. Grissom and Hanlon led the team in RBIs with two apiece while Davidson and Travis had one RBI each.
Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) got the start for the Wolves and earned a no decision while pitching 3.1 innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Lucian Walker (Starkville) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Caleb Flynn (Laurel) got his first collegiate win as he pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief with one hit and one strikeout.
GAME THREE
The Dolphins took an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first making the score, 1-0. They then extended their lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the third taking a 2-0 lead over the Wolves.
The Wolves then responded with three runs in the top of the fourth as Trey Davidson got the offense going by reaching base on an error while Bradley Hanlon drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. Donovan Moore then crushed a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run home run to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead.
However, the Dolphins responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half to retake the lead at 4-3. The Wolves then struck for a run in the top of the fifth as Evan Holifield hit a one-out double to get the offense started. Holifield advanced to third on a single by Bryson Jones and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Avery Griffin tying the game at 4-4.
The Wolves then regained the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh as Brady White smashed a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left field for a leadoff solo home run to give the Wolves a 5-4 lead. Holifield then followed with a single and later advanced to second as Griffin drew a walk. Holifield took third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Davidson increasing the lead to 6-4. The Dolphins then went strikeout, groundout, hit-by-pitch, and. Strikeout to end the game and secure the win for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled six hits as Evan Holifield had two while Bryson Jones, Donovan Moore, John Mark Grissom, and Brady White had one hit each. Moore led the team in RBIs with three while Griffin, Davidson, and White had one RBI each.
Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) got the start and earned a no decision while pitching 3.1 innings and allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Akavion Griffith (Magee) piched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief while Wes White (Flowood) got his first win of the season with three scoreless innings of relief with one hit and five strikeouts.
GAME FOUR
The Wolves took an early lead in this game with a single run in the top of the third as Evan Holifield drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bryson Jones. Holifield advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on an RBI-single by Avery Griffin to give the Wolves a 1-0.
The Dolphins responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half including a leadoff solo home run while going on to take a 2-1 lead. The Wolves tied the game with a single run in the top of the fourth as Bradley Hanlon hit a leadoff triple and then scored on an RBI-double by Donovan Moore making the score, 2-2.
The Dolphins then struck for a single run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. The Wolves then got the tying run on base as Bryson Jones hit a two-out single in the top of the seventh, but a flyout ended the inning and sealed the 3-2 win for the Dolphins.
The Wolves totaled six hits in the game as Bryson Jones, Avery Griffin, Bradley Hanlon, Donovan Moore, Hayes Hebert (Lafayette, LA) and Evan Holifield had one hit each. Griffin and Moore had one RBI each.
Tanner Blackwell (Flora) got the start and earned a no decision while pitching 4.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Ty Blakeney made a relief appearance for the Wolves and had one walk while MT Breland (Columbia) took the loss (0-1) in relief with one inning pitched allowing one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts while Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) pitched 0.1 innings of relief.
Co-Lin is now 5-1 on the season and will return to action hosting Mineral Area for a four game set this weekend with two games on Friday, February 13, and two games on Saturday, February 14. Both doubleheaders are set to start at Noon on each day at Sullivan Field.
