Wolves Sweep Trojans

MOORHEAD – The Co-Lin Baseball team hit the road to continue MACCC play by facing off against Mississippi Delta on Saturday, March 14. The Wolves swept the Trojans taking game one, 19-5, and game two, 14-3.

GAME ONE

The Wolves got on the board first with three runs in the top of the first as Bryson Jones (Brandon) drew a leadoff walk while Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) singled while Jones advanced to third on the play. Griffin then stole second while an error on the play allowed Jones to score and give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Griffin scored on an RBI-groundout by Trey Davidson (Brandon) increasing the lead to 2-0. Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) then singled, stole second, advanced to third and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brady White (Ethel) pushing the lead to 3-0.

The Wolves then added two runs in the top of the third as Griffin hit a leadoff double and then scored on an RBI-double by Davidson. Davidson took third on a passed ball and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hanlon making the score, 5-0.

The Trojans then hit a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the fourth cutting the lead down to 5-1. However, the Wolves got the run back in the top of the fifth as Hanlon drew a leadoff walk, took second on a groundout, tagged up and advanced to third after a flyout, and then scored on a balk increasing the lead to 6-1. The Trojans responded with a single run in the bottom half making the score, 6-2.

The Wolves then added four runs in the top of the sixth as Donovan Moore (Roxie) hit a leadoff triple and then scored on an RBI-single by Evan Holifield (Stringer). Holifield then stole second and later in the inning scored on an RBI-single by Griffin. Griffin then scored on an RBI-double by Davidson who then scored on a second-straight RBI-double by Hanlon extending the lead to 10-2.

The Wolves then added three runs in the top of the seventh as Moore, Holifield, and Jones drew three straight walks to load the bases with no outs. All three then scored on a three-RBI double by Griffin increasing the lead to 13-2. The Trojans then scored three in the bottom half to cut the lead down to 13-5.

The Wolves added six runs in the top of the ninth as Jacob Chancelor (Brandon) drew a walk while Hayes Hebert (Lafayette, LA) singled to put two runners on with one out. Chancelor then scored on an RBI-double by Drake Frasier (Waynesboro) while Hebert later scored on a balk making the score, 15-5. Later in the inning, Frasier scored on an RBI-double by Moore while Kade Walker (Magee) singled and Cam Murphy (Brandon) drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Griffin then hit his second three-RBI double of the game scoring Moore, Walker, and Murphy and increasing the lead to 19-5.

The Trojans then went groundout, hit-by-pitch, pop out, and strikeout in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory for the Wolves.

The Wolves totaled 18 hits as Avery Griffin led the way going 5-for-7 at the plate while Trey Davidson, Bradley Hanlon, Donovan Moore, and Evan Holifield had two hits apiece with Bryson Jones, Hayes Hebert, John Mark Grissom (Pearl), Drake Frasier, and Kade Walker had one hit each. Griffin led the Wolves in RBIs with seven while Davidson had three with Hanlon adding two and White, Frasier, Moore, and Holifield had one RBI each.

Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) got the start and improved to 3-2 overall while pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Parker Ishee (Ridgeland) made his season debut with one scoreless inning of relief allowing one hit with one strikeout while Tanner Blackwell (Flora) pitched one inning of relief allowing three runs, all earned, on two hits with two strikeouts. MT Breland (Columbia) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with two walks while Ty Blakeney (Taylorsville) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The Trojans got on the board first as they hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to take and early 3-0 lead.

The Wolves responded with four runs in the top of the second as Donovan Moore, Matthew Combs (Hurley), and Evan Holifield drew walks to load the bases with one out. Moore then scored on a passed ball while Combs then scored as Bryson Jones reached safely on a fielder's choice cutting the lead down to 3-2. Avery Griffin then drew a walk to load the bases while a two-RBI double by Trey Davidson scored Holifield and Jones giving the Wolves a 4-3 lead.

The Wolves added a single run in the top of the third as Moore was hit-by-pitch, took second on a passed ball, and later scored on a fly out increasing the lead to 5-3. The Wolves added another solo run in the top of the fourth as Bradley Hanlon hit a leadoff single, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Brady White, and later scored on an RBI-double by Moore pushing the lead to 6-3.

The Wolves scored their final eight runs in the top of the fifth as Jones hit a leadoff single while Griffin followed by drawing a walk to put two runners on with no outs. Jones then scored on an RBI-double by Davidson while Hanlon was hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Griffin then scored as White drew a walk, Davidson scored on an RBI-groundout by John Mark Grissom, while Hanlon scored on a passed ball making the score, 10-3. Combs then drew a walk to load the bases with one out while White then scored on an RBI-groundout by Holifield. Combs and Moore then scored on a two-RBI single by Jones who later scored as Griffin reached on an error increasing the lead to 14-3.

The Trojans then went strikeout, walk, flyout, and groundout in the bottom of the fifth to secure the game two victory and sweep for the Wolves.

The Wolves totaled seven hits as Bryson Jones, Trey Davidson, and Bradley Hanlon had two hits each while Donovan Moore had one hit. Jones and Davidson led the Wolves in RBIs with three apiece while Moore, Brady White, John Mark Grissom, Matthew Combs, and Evan Holifield had one RBI each. The Wolves also drew 13 walks with Avery Griffin having four in the game.

Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) improved to 3-1 overall with the complete game win allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.

Co-Lin improves to 18-9 overall, 3-1 in MACCC play, and will return to action hosting Hinds on Wednesday, March 18. First pitch between the Eagle and the Wolves is set for 3 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
