Wolves Drop Two Against Warriors

DECATUR, Miss. – The Co-Lin Baseball team resumed MACCC play with a Top 25 road matchup against East Central on Wednesday, March 25. The No. 1 Warriors swept the No. 25 Wolves taking game one, 8-1, and game two, 11-7.

GAME ONE

The Warriors jumped ahead early with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first taking an early, 2-0 lead. The Wolves then cut into the lead with one run in the top of the second as John Mark Grissom (Pearl) hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Later in the inning, Grissom scored as Holifield reached on an error cutting the lead down to 2-1.

The Warriors then added two more in the bottom of the second including a leadoff solo home run pushing the lead to 4-1. The Warriors added two more on another two-run home run in the bottom of the third increasing the lead to 6-1.

After retiring the Wolves in order in the top of the fourth, the Warriors hit a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the fourth making the score, 7-1. The Wolves then threatened to score in the top of the fifth as Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) hit a one-out double to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) and Donovan Moore (Roxie) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with two outs; however, a flyout brought the scoring threat to an end and left the bases loaded.

The Warriors then added a run in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 8-1. The Warriors then limited the Wolves to just three baserunners over the final three innings via a two-out single by Trey Davidson (Brandon) in the seventh and a walk to Holifield along with Bryson Jones (Brandon) being hit-by-pitch in the ninth to seal the 8-1 win.

The Wolves totaled four hits in the game as Avery Griffin, Trey Davidson, Bradley Hanlon, and John Mark Grissom had one hit each.

Wes White (Flowood) got the start and moved to 5-2 overall with three innings pitched allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with four strikeouts. Parker Ishee (Ridgeland) pitched three innings of relief allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts. Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) and Brayden Cooley (Flora) pitched an inning of scoreless and hitless relief with one strikeout each. For Cooley the appearance marked his first of the season for the Wolves.

GAME TWO

The Warriors got on the board first as they scored a run in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Warriors then added three in the bottom of the second to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Wolves then cut the lead in half as they scored two runs in the top of the third with Evan Holifield drawing a leadoff walk to get the offense going. However, Holifield was forced out as Bryson Jones reached on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, Jones scored on an RBI-single by Trey Davidson while a second-straight RBI-single by Bradley Hanlon scored Davidson and made the score, 4-2.

The Warriors then got both runs back as they took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the bottom of the third and made the score, 6-2. However, the Wolves responded by tying the game with four runs in the top of the fourth as John Mark Grissom reached on an error to start the inning while Donovan Moore drew a walk. Grissom was then forced out as Cam Murphy (Brandon) reached on a fielder's choice. Holifield then hit an RBI-double scoring Moore while Murphy scored on an RBI-single by Jones cutting the lead down to 6-4. Later in the inning, Holifield and Jones scored as Davidson reached on an error tying the game at 6-6.

The Wolves then took the lead with a single run in the top of the fifth as Grissom was hit-by-pitch, Moore reached on an error, and Murphy walked to load the bases with one out. Grissom then scored on a sacrifice fly by Holifield giving the Wolves a 7-6 lead.

The Warriors were then retired in order in the bottom of the fifth. After the Wolves were also retired in order in the top of the sixth, the Warriors hit three home runs and scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 11-7 lead. The Wolves were then retired in order in the top of the seventh to seal the win for the Warriors.

The Wolves totaled five hits as Trey Davidson led the way with two while Bryson Jones, Bradley Hanlon, and Evan Holifield had one hit each. Holifield led the team in RBIs with two while Jones, Davidson, and Hanlon had one each.

Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) got the start and earned a no-decision while pitching 1.1 innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts while Caleb Flynn (Laurel) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing two unearned runs on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. Lucian Walker (Starkville) made a relief appearance and allowed two hits while Nash Sturdivant pitched 0.2 innings allowing one hit with one walk. Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) took the loss in relief (3-2) while pitching 1.2 innings and allowing four runs, two earned on three hits with three strikeouts. Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) pitched 0.2 innings allowing one earned run on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts while MT Breland (Columbia) pitched 0.1 innings of relief and retired the only batter he faced.

Co-Lin is now 19-12 overall, 4-4 in MACCC play and will hit the road to face off against Northeast on Saturday, March 28. First pitch between the Tigers and the Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at The Plex in Booneville.
