Wolves Split Against Tigers
BOONEVILLE – The Co-Lin Baseball team hit the road to continue MACCC play against Northeast on Saturday, March 28. The Wolves and Tigers split the day as the Wolves took game one, 7-0, while the Tigers took game two, 7-1.
GAME ONE
The game was scoreless as neither team got a runner past second through the first five innings. The Wolves broke through with a single run in the top of the sixth as Evan Holifield (Stringer) reached on an error to start the inning. Holifield then took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bryson Jones (Brandon), and scored on an RBI-single by Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) making the score, 1-0.
The Wolves then added five runs in the eighth as Griffin drew a one-out walk to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) singled while Brady White (Ethel) drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. John Mark Grissom (Pearl) then hit a two-RBI double scoring Griffin and Hanlon while White then scored on an RBI-double by Donovan Moore (Roxie) making the score, 4-0. Moore and Grissom then scored as Jacob Chancelor (Brandon) reached o an error increasing the lead to 6-0.
The Wolves then added their final run in the top of the ninth as Jones was hit-by-pitch to start the inning and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Griffin. After Trey Davidson (Brandon) was hit-by-pitch, Hanlon hit an RBI-single scoring Jones and pushing the lead to 7-0. The Tigers then had one runner reach on an error with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but a flyout ended the inning securing the game one victory for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled nine hits as Bradley Hanlon led the way with three hits while Jacob Chancelor had two hits with Bryson Jones, Avery Griffin, John Mark Grissom, and Donovan Moore had one hit each. Grissom led the Wolves in RBIs with two while Griffin, Hanlon, and Moore had one RBI each.
Tanner Blackwell (Flora) got the start and earned a no-decision while pitching four innings and allowing two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Lucian Walker (Starkville) earned his first career win (1-0) with 2.2 innings of relief allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) pitched 1.1 innings with one strikeout while Caleb Flynn (Laurel) pitched one inning with one strikeout.
GAME TWO
The Tigers took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the bottom of the first to plate two runs and take an early 2-0 lead. The Tigers then scored one in the second, two in the third, and one in the fifth while keeping the Wolves offense for getting a runner past second base to extend their lead to 6-0.
The lone run for the Wolves came in the top of the sixth as Trey Davidson hit a leadoff single and then later scored on an RBI-single by John Mark Grissom making the score, 6-1. The Tigers then scored one run in the bottom half and retired the Wolves in order in the top of the seventh to seal the split of the day.
The Wolves totaled four hits in the game with Trey Davidson going 3-for-3 at the plate while John Mark Grissom had one hit and one RBI.
Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) got the start and took the loss (3-3) while pitching 1.2 innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Akavion Griffith (Magee) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts while Brayden Cooley (Flora) made a relief appearance allowing one run on one hit with one walk. Nash Sturdivant pitched 1.2 innings allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts while Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) pitched one inning allowing one run one two walks with two strikeouts.
Co-Lin is now 20-13 overall, 5-5 in MACCC play and will return to action hosting Pearl River on Tuesday, March 31. First pitch between the No. 2 Wildcats and the Wolves is set for 3 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
