Wolves Split with Bobcats

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team resumed MACCC play by hosting Jones for a Top 25 showdown on Wednesday, March 8. The No. 2 Bobcats and the No. 23 Wolves split the day as the Wolves walked off game one, 4-3, and the Bobcats took game two, 14-0.

GAME ONE

The Wolves struck first as they plated one run in the bottom of the first with Bryson Jones (Brandon) hitting a leadoff double to get the offense started. Donovan Moore (Roxie) then hit a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Trey Davidson (Brandon) then hit into a double play, but Jones scored to give the Wolves an early 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats then scored two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Wolves responded with a single run in the bottom of the third as Moore hit a leadoff triple and then scored on an RBI-double by Davidson tying the game at 2-2.

That score held as the teams were held to a combined four baserunners through the top of the seventh, but the Wolves broke the tie with a solo run in the bottom half. Evan Holifield (Stringer) hit a leadoff double while Jones hit a bunt single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Holifield then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Moore to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead.

The Bobcats then tied the game for a second time with a run in the top of the eighth making the score, 3-3. The Wolves looked to regain the lead in the bottom half as Caleb Brooks (Brandon) reached on an error while Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs. However, a strikeout followed by a double play ended the inning with the game still tied.

The Bobcats were retired in order in the top of the ninth setting the stage for a potential Wolves walk-off win in the bottom half. The Wolves started the inning with a flyout and a strikeout as the game looked to be headed to extra innings. However, Davidson hit a two-out single to extend the inning while Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) got to be the walk-off winner for the Wolves as he hit a triple down the right field line scoring Davidson for the final of 4-3.

The Wolves totaled 11 hits as Bryson Jones, Donovan Moore, Trey Davidson, and Evan Holifield had two hits apiece while Bradley Hanlon, Caleb Brooks, and Avery Griffin had one hit each. Moore, Davidson, and Hanlon had one RBI each.

Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) got the start and earned a no-decision while pitching 1.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on one hit with two walks and one strikeout. Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) pitched 5.2 innings of relief allowing one earned run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Jennings Kimbrell (Florence) pitched 0.1 innings of relief with one hit. Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) got the win in relief (3-1) while pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless and hitless relief with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The Bobcats scored at least two runs in every inning in game two starting with two in the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Wolves then got two runners on with one out as Bryson Jones drew a leadoff walk while Trey Davidson was later hit-by-pitch. However, the Wolves could not push a run across as Jones was thrown out at home on a double steal attempt while a flyout then ended the inning.

The Bobcats then added six in the second and then two in the third, fourth, and fifth innings while holding the Wolves to just four more baserunners across that span all via walks to seal the 14-0 win.

The Wolves drew five walks in the contest and had two hit-by-pitches.

Wes White (Flowood) got the start and took the loss (5-4) while pitching 1.1 innings and allowing seven runs, all earned, on six hits with two walks. Caleb Flynn (Laurel) pitched 0.2 innings of relief with one earned run on two hits with one strikeout while Ty Blakeney (Taylorsville) pitched 0.1 innings of relief allowing two earned runs with one walk. Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits while MT Breland (Columbia) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on one hit with two walks. Lucian Walker (Starkville) pitched 0.1 innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit. Brayden Cooley (Flora) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on one hit with two walks and one strikeout while Akavion Griffith (Magee) pitched 0.1 innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit.

Co-Lin is now 24-15 overall, 9-7 in MACCC play and will return to action on the road against Itawamba on Saturday, March 11. First pitch between the No. 23 Wolves and the Indians is set for 2 p.m., at Roy Cresap Field in Fulton.
