Four Wolves Earn All-Conference Honors
JACKSON – The Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference announced the All-MACCC Selections for Men's Basketball for the 2022-23 season on Thursday, March 9. The Wolves had four members of the team selected to spots on the All-Conference lists as freshman forward Dylan Canoville (Plantation, FL) and sophomore forward AJ Warnsley (Byram) were named as First Team All-MACCC honorees while sophomore guards Jemario Hersey (Brookhaven) and Cowandric Samuel (Jackson) were named as Second Team All-MACCC honorees.
Dylan Canoville had a freshman season for the record books for the Wolves as he averaged a double-double for the season where he played in all 24 game. Canoville led the Wolves in points per game at 16.5 and rebounds per game at 12.2 as well as total point at 397 and total rebounds at 292. Canoville was sixth in the MACCC in points per game and total points and led the conference in rebounds per game and total rebounds. Canoville was also third in the NJCAA in rebounds per game. He also ended the regular season with 12 double-double performances and finished the regular season with five consecutive double-doubles.
AJ Warnsley had a superb sophomore season playing in all 24 games for the Wolves as he averaged 14.6 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game with those marks being third-most and second-most on the team respectively. Warnsley finished Top-20 in the MACCC in both points per game and total points at 350 while also finishing eighth in rebounds per game and ninth in total rebounds at 194. Warnsley had seven double-doubles on the season with his best performance coming in the Wolves 76-74 road win against Jones where he scored 30 points and had 13 rebounds; however, Warnsley's best rebounding night came in the regular season finale in the Wolves 70-58 road win over Meridian where he had 16 boards for the Wolves.
Jemario Hersey had a stellar sophomore season also playing in all 24 games for the Wolves as he made his scoring presence known all year averaging 15.4 points per game which was second on the team. Hersey also averaged 4.7 rebounds per game and 1.3 assists per game. Jemario finished 11th in the MACCC in total points at 364 and 12th in points per game. Hersey had one double-double on the season in the Wolves 99-62 win over Delgado where he scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds while Hersey also had another 22-point game in the Wolves triple overtime loss to Holmes. Hersey's best scoring nights on the season were in two wins as he dropped 23 points in the Wolves 76-74 road win over Jones and then in the Wolves 88-81 win over Itawamba.
Cowandric Samuel was the floor general for the Wolves and did an excellent job all season while playing in all 24 games. Samuel was fourth on the Wolves in points per game at 12.2, third in rebounds per game at 5.3, and led the team in assists per game at 5.9. Samuel was second in the MACCC in assists per game and third in total assists at 141. His highest scoring nights came when he posted 21 points in the Wolves 100-83 win over East Central where he also posted a double-double performance by added 13 assists, and in the regular season finale road win, 70-58, over Meridian. Samuel had three double-doubles throughout the season coming in the Wolves 78-74 loss against LSU-Eunice where he posted 18 points and 13 rebounds, along with a 16 point, 14 assist double-double in the Wolves 88-81 win over Itawamba to go along with his double-double against East Central.
The Wolves finished the 2022-23 regular season, 18-6 overall and 12-2 in MACCC play. The Wolves ended the regular season with an 11-game winning streak which propelled them to claim the 2022-23 MACCC Conference Championship for the first time since the 1998-99 season.
