Ward named NJCAA Pitcher of the Week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Copiah-Lincoln Community College sophomore softball pitcher Kaytlon Ward was tabbed NJCAA National Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday for her stellar performances last week against Southwest, the then-ranked No. 3 Des Moines Area Lady Bears, and the then-ranked No. 5 Highland Scotties. Ward picked up two wins on the week and earned MACJC Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Grant, La. native threw 17.2 innings through three outings and struck out a staggering 23 batters. She gave up 17 hits, 14 runs (nine earned), and walked eight. Ward shined in the matchups with Des Moines Area and Highland as she threw complete games and struck 11 and nine batters, respectively.
"Winning NJCAA Pitcher of the Week is such a huge honor. This means a lot to me and my teammates because it shows how much our hard work is paying off," said Ward. "Every day since fall we have put so much work in, on and off the field and in the weight room. To be able to win things like this you have to have integrity...it's all about what you do when no one is watching because it will show. If you wanna be the best you have to outwork the best. None of this would have been possible without the support of my teammates, coaches, family, and God for blessing me with the talent to play."
The exciting week of play propelled the Lady Wolves No. 4 in the nation and gave the team loads of momentum heading into MACJC play. The 10-1 Lady Wolves are back on the diamond this Friday, March 6, as the team plays host to Meridian Community College in Wesson. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
