WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team returned to action by hosting LSU-Eunice for a Top 5 showdown on Wednesday, March 3. The No. 5 Lady Wolves swept the No. 4 Lady Bengals taking game one, 7-4, and game two, 7-6.
GAME ONE
The Lady Bengals got on the board first with a single run in the top of the first to take an early lead, 1-0. The Lady Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half as Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) drew a leadoff walk to start the inning. Later in the inning, Brooklyn Reine (Kentwood, LA) crushed a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left field for a two-run home to give the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Bengals then tied the game with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the second making the score, 2-2. However, the Lady Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning as Annie Poole (Brookhaven) led off the inning being hit-by-pitch. Stella Roberts (Raymond) then hit a bunt single while an error on the play allowed Poole to score and give the Lady Wolves a 3-2 lead. Roberts then scored on a sacrifice fly by Addison Lindley while later in the inning, Phillips ambushed the first pitch of her at-bat and crushed it over the left field fence for a solo home run increasing the lead to 5-2.
The Lady Wolves increased their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Reine hit a leadoff single to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Poole smashed a 2-0 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run increasing the lead to 7-2.
The Lady Bengals then cut into the lead with a pair of solo home runs in the top of the fifth making the score, 7-4. The Lady Bengals looked to cut into the lead in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases with two outs. The Lady Wolves then turned to the bullpen as Lily Crum (Vidalia, LA) came in for a relief appearance. Crum then got a strikeout to end the inning and maintain the lead.
The Lady Bengals then went strikeout, strikeout, walk, lineout in the top of the seventh to secure the 7-4 victory for the Lady Wolves.
The Lady Wolves totaled seven hits as Brooklen Reine led the way with two hits while Brelie Phillips, Morgan Chisolm, Annie Poole, Stella Roberts, and Addison Lindley had one hit each. Reine and Poole led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with two apiece while Phillips and Lindley had one RBI each.
Addison Lindley got the start and improved to 8-1 overall with 5.2 innings pitched allowing four runs, all earned, on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts while Lily Crum got her first collegiate save with 1.1 innings of scoreless and hitless relief with one walk and three strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The Lady Bengals got on the board early with two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Wolves responded by cutting the lead in half as Brelie Phillips crushed a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for a leadoff solo home run making the score, 2-1.
The Lady Wolves then tied the game as Abby Burnette blasted a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left field for a solo home run making the score, 2-2 in the bottom of the second. The Lady Wolves then took the lead with a single run in the bottom of the third as Brooklen Reine drew a one-out walk, stole second, and then scored an RBI-single by Annie Poole making the score, 3-2.
The Lady Bengals then scored a run in the top of the fifth making the score, 3-3. However, the Lady Wolves responded as Phillips demolished a 1-0 pitch over the centerfield fence for a leadoff solo home run, her second of the game and third of the day, giving the Lady Wolves a 4-3 lead. Once again, the Lady Bengals tied the game, this time with a solo home run, making the score, 4-4 in the top of the sixth.
The Lady Wolves took the lead for good as they plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth as Annie Poole drew a leadoff walk. Later in the inning, Landry Loper was brought in as a pinch runner but was forced out as Stella Roberts reached on a fielder's choice. Roberts then scored on an RBI-double by Burnette giving the Lady Wolves a 5-4 lead. Ahylana Houston (Summit) and Phillips then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with two outs. Burnette and Houston then scored on a two-RBI single by Ayari VanBlaircom increasing the lead to 7-4.
The Lady Bengals then scored two runs in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at first base, but a lineout ended the game sealing the game two victory and sweep, 7-6.
The Lady Wolves totaled nine hits as a team with Brelie Phillips, Ayari VanBlaircom, and Abby Burnette had two hits apiece while Brooklyn Reine, Annie Poole, and Stella Roberts had one hit each. Phillips, VanBlaircom, and Burnette had two RBIs each while Poole had one RBI.
Ava Browder (Picayune) got the start and improved to 7-1 overall pitching 6.2 innings allowing six runs, four earned, on 10 hihts with two walks and one strikeout. Lily Crum made relief appearance with one walk while Addison Lindley got her second save of the season retiring the only batter she faced.
Co-Lin improves to 19-2 overall and will return to action on the road for their MACCC opener against Coahoma on Friday, March 6. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Tigers is set for 1 p.m., in Clarksdale!
