Lady Wolves Comeback Leads to Sweep of Tigers

WESSON – The Co-Lin Softball team resumed MACCC play by hosting Northeast on Saturday, March 28. The No. 3 Lady Wolves swept the No. 19 Tigers taking game one in a 9-7 comeback win and then winning game two, 21-5.

GAME ONE

The game was scoreless after the first inning, but the Tigers broke the stalemate with a grand slam in the top of the second to take an early 4-0 lead. The Wolves scored a single run in the bottom of the second as Noelle Laiche (Gonzales, LA) hit a two-out single to extend the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error. Laiche then scored on an RBI-single by Brelie Phillips (Conehatta) making the score, 4-1.

The Tigers then got the run back as they hit a leadoff solo home run in the top of the third making the score, 5-1. The Lady Wolves then cut into the lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth as Abby Burnette smashed a 0-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a leadoff solo home run, her second of the season, making the score, 5-2.

The Tigers then plated two runs in the top of the fifth increasing their lead to 7-2. The Lady Wolves responded with one run in the bottom half as Emilie Williams (Summit) hit a leadoff double and then later scored on an RBI-single by Morgan Chisolm (Madison) cutting the lead down to 7-3.

The Lady Wolves then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth as Ayari VanBlaircom (Daphne, AL) drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. VanBlaircom then scored on an RBI-single by Annie Poole (Brookhaven) cutting the lead down to 7-4. After Landry Loper (Olive Branch) was brought in as a pinch runner, Williams and Olivia Higginbotham (Hernando) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. Chisolm then crushed a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left field into the Lady Wolves bullpen for a grand slam to take an 8-7 lead. Katelynn Malone (Bogue Chitto) then reached base on an error while Laiche later drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs. Malone then scored on an RBI-single by Phillips increasing the lead to 9-7.

The Tigers then got a leadoff single to start the seventh, but a double play followed by a groundout secured the game one victory for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 12 hits as Brelie Phillips led the way with three hits while Emilie Williams and Morgan Chisolm had two hits apiece with Annie Poole, Olivia Higginbotham, Katelynn Malone, Abby Burnette, and Noelle Laiche had one hit each. Chisolm led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with five while Phillips had two with Poole and Burnette adding one each.

Addison Lindley (Madison) got the start and picked up a no-decision while pitching two innings and allowing five runs, all earned, on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Lily Crum (Vidalia, LA) pitched 2.2 innings allowing two runs, both earned on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Mady McCrory (Purvis) picked up her first career win (1-0) with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief with one hit and three strikeouts, all three from the first three batters she faced in the appearance.

GAME TWO

The Lady Wolves wasted no time taking a commanding lead as they scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first as Brelie Phillips hit a leadoff triple while Ayari VanBlaircom reached on an error. The Lady Wolves then pulled a double steal as VanBlaircom stole second while Phillips stole home; however, VanBlaircom was then thrown out trying to take third on the play giving the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead. Annie Poole then reached on an error while Emilie Williams hit a double to put two runners in scoring position. Poole and Williams then scored on a two-RBI single by Katelynn Malone making the score, 3-0. Morgan Chisolm then singled to put runners on the corners. After Chisolm stole second, Stella Roberts (Raymond) hit a two-RBI single scoring Malone and Chisolm pushing the lead to 5-0. Later in the inning, Laiche drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs while Phillips then hit a two-RBI double scoring Roberts and Laiche. VanBlaircom then drew a walk while Phillips then scored on an RBI-single. Williams then crushed a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a three-run home run for the final runs of the inning making the lead, 11-0.

The Lady Wolves then added three runs in the bottom of the second as Chisolm and Roberts drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Abby Burnette then hit an RBI-single scoring Chisolm making the score, 12-0. After Laiche drew a walk, Roberts scored on a wild pitch while Burnette then scored on a sacrifice fly by Phillips increasing the lead to 14-0.

After the Tigers scored four runs in the top of the third, the Lady Wolves responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half as Chisolm hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Roberts was then hit-by-pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch putting two runners in scoring position. Burnette then reached on an error as Chisolm and Roberts scored on the play. Later in the inning, Ahlyana Houston smashed a 3-2 pitch over the fence in right field for a two-run home run, her first of the season, making the score, 18-4.

The Tigers then scored one run in the top of the fourth making the score, 18-5. However, the Lady Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom half as Addison Lindley hit a leadoff single while Brooklyn Reine (Kentwood, LA) was hit-by-pitch, and Mady McCrory was walked to load the bases to start the inning. Bailey Parks (Smithdale) then ripped a two-RBI double scoring Lindley and Reine while McCrory then scored on an RBI-groundout by Landry Loper increasing the lead to 21-5.

The Tigers were then retired in order in the top of the fifth to secure the game two victory and sweep for the Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves totaled 15 hits as Brelie Phillips, Annie Poole, Emilie Williams, Katelynn Malone, and Morgan Chisolm had two hits apiece while Ahlyana Houston, Addison Lindley, Stella Roberts, Bailey Parks, and Abby Burnette had one hit each. Phillips and Williams led the Lady Wolves in RBIs with three each while Houston, Malone, Roberts, and Parks had two RBIs apiece with Poole, Burnette, and Landry Loper adding one RBI each.

Ava Browder (Picayune) got the start and improved to 13-1 overall while pitching three innings and allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits with one strikeout while Maddie West (Gonzales, LA) pitched two innings allowing one unearned run with one walk and one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 31-2 overall, 12-0 in MACCC play and will return to action on the road against Pearl River on Tuesday, March 31. First pitch between the No. 3 Lady Wolves and the No. 1 Wildcats is set for 4 p.m., at Wildcat Stadium in Poplarville.
