Lady Wolves Split Road Doubleheader
SCOOBA – The Co-Lin Softball team hit the road to face off against MACCC foe East Mississippi on Friday, April 3. The Lady Wolves split the day with the Lady Lions as they dropped game one, 3-1, and then rebounded to take game two, 10-3.
GAME ONE
The Lady Wolves got on the board first as they scored a run in the top of the first with Ayari VanBlaircom (Daphne, AL) hitting a one-out double to get the offense going. Annie Poole (Brookhaven) then drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. After Poole was forced out after Emilie Williams (Summit) reached on a fielder's choice, Olivia Higginbotham (Hernando) hit an RBI-single scoring VanBlaircom and making the score, 1-0.
The Lady Lions then keep the Lady Wolves off the board in the second and third while hitting a three-run home run in the bottom of the third making the score, 3-1. The Lady Lions then continued to frustrate the Lady Wolves offense as the team could not get a runner to second base across the final four innings sealing the win for the Lady Lions.
The Lady Wolves totaled six hits as Brelie Phillips (Conehatta), Ayari VanBlaircom, Olivia Higginbotham, Abby Burnette (Brookhaven), Addison Lindley (Madison), and Noelle Laiche (Gonzales, LA) had one hit each.
Addison Lindley got the start and moved to 14-2 with the loss while pitching six innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The game was scoreless after the first inning, but the Lady Wolves broke the stalemate with a single run in the top of the second. Emilie Williams was hit-by-pitch while Addison Lindley safley reached on a fielder's choice putting two runners on with no outs. After both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Higginbotham, Morgan Chisolm (Madison) hit an RBI-single scoring Williams and giving the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Wolves increased the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third as Brelie Phillips drew a leadoff walk. Ayari VanBlaircom then crushed a 2-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run making the score, 3-0.
The Lady Wolves added two more runs in the top of the fourth as Abby Burnette smashed a 3-2 pitch over the fence in centerfield for leadoff solo home run. Later in the inning, Phillips hit a one-out single, stole second, and scored on an RBI-single by Annie Poole increasing the lead to 5-0.
That lead held until the bottom of the sixth when the Lady Lions hit a three-run home run cutting the lead down to 5-3. However, the Lady Wolves responded with five runs in the top of the seventh all coming with two outs as Brooklyn Reine (Kentwood, LA) got the offense going with a single. Reine then scored on an RBI-double by Stella Roberts (Raymond) who then scored on an RBI-single by Chisolm pushing the lead to 7-3. After Landry Loper (Olive Branch) was brought in as a pinch runner and stole second, she scored on an RBI-single by Burnette. Laiche then crushed a 1-0 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run making the lead, 10-3.
The Lady Lions then got a leadoff single, but a double play followed by a groundout ended the game securing the game two victory and split for the Lady Wolves.
The Lady Wolves totaled 12 hits as a team with Ayari VanBlaircom, Annie Poole, Morgan Chisolm, and Abby Burnette having two hits each while Brelie Phillips, Brooklyn Reine, Stella Roberts, and Noelle Laiche had one hit each. VanBlaircom, Chisolm, Burnette, and Laiche led the team in RBIs with two apiece while Poole and Roberts had one RBI each.
Lily Crum (Vidalia, LA) got the start and picked up the win (3-0) while pitching 5.2 innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Mady McCrory (Purvis) got her first save of the season with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit.
Co-Lin is now 33-4 overall, 14-2 in MACCC play, and will return to action on the road against Jones for a Top 10 matchup on Tuesday, April 7. First pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Bobcats is scheduled for 4 p.m., at Community Bank Park in Ellisville.
