Lady Wolves win opener over Hinds
Freshman Aniya Sanders scored a game-high 19 points in her debut to lead the Co-Lin Lady Wolves to a 63-49 win over the Hinds Lady Bulldogs in the 2021 season opener. Co-Lin (1-0) will travel to Perkinston on Monday, Feb. 1, to take on the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early 12-3 lead with 5:44 remaining in the first quarter. Sanders scored six straight points and point guard Jamya Blue added two free throws to give Co-Lin a 13-12 lead with 2:13 left in the first quarter.
The Lady Wolves built their lead to 31-26 at the half.
The lead increased their lead to 40-29 in the third quarter as Co-Lin went on a 9-2 run. A basket by Akyriale Ford with 7:00 minutes left in the game pulled the Lady Bulldogs to within four at 47-43. Co-Lin would respond with an 11-0 run with 1:52 remaining to secure the win.
"I think we had some spots on offense where we didn't know what we doing," said Lady Wolves head coach Gwyn Young. "We were playing pretty hard on defense. The second half, we were a little bit better ran our offense and made a couple shots, but we have a lot of work to do to get better. We've got to get everybody involved a little bit more. We had some people play better than I expected them to and then we had some people who didn't as good. Hopefully we can work out the kinks because we go to Gulf Coast on Monday. It looks like the league has a lot of size and we've got to do a better job of blocking out."
Also scoring in double figures for the Lady Wolves were Morgan McCray and Derrica Gilbert who chipped in 10 points apiece. McCray led Co-Lin on the backboards with seven rebounds.
For Hinds, Akyriale Ford led the way with 18 points followed by T'Onna Sims with 12.
