Gilbert leads Lady Wolves to a 63-60 win over Pearl River

WESSON - Sophomore Derrica Gilbert scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Co-Lin Lady Wolves to a 63-60 win over the Pearl River Lady Wildcats. Co-Lin remains undefeated at 3-0, Pearl River falls to 1-3.

"Derrica had a good game, she shot the ball well and more importantly, made her free throws," said Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young. "Pearl River's half court press really gave us trouble. We are glad to come away with a win."

Both teams got off to a slow start each only scoring 8 points in the first quarter. The Lady Wolves managed to put 15 points up in the second quarter to take a 23-17 at the half.

The second half, both teams seemed to find the range as they were tied at 37-all going into the final period. It came down to free throw shooting in the final minutes. With 1:31 left in the game, Co-Lin led 55-48 and seemed to have the game in hand, but Lady Wildcat Brandy Scott hit two free throws to cut the Lady Wolves lead to 57-54 with 34 seconds remaining. Pearl River's Ty'Mesha Reed scored a bucket to cut the Co-Lin lead to 61-60 with time running out. Co-Lin's Gilbert was fouled on the inbounds play and nailed two free throws to ice the game for the Lady Wolves.

Marvia Spann and Jakrya Young chipped in 8 points apiece for the Lady Wolves Bryanna Taylor led Pearl River with 14 points followed by Reed with 13.

The Lady Wolves game with East Central has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues and will be rescheduled at a later date. Co-Lin will have a week to prepare as the Jones Lady Bobcats invade Mullen Gym on Thursday, Feb. 11. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
