Lady Wolves Upended by Lady Bengals
EUNICE, La. – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team played their final game before Christmas Break on the road against LSU-Eunice on Saturday, December 14. The Lady Wolves saw the season-long winning streak ended by the Lady Bengals with a 68-54 loss.
"This loss was disappointing," stated Co-Lin head coach Dr. Britta Stephens. "LSU Eunice was much better than we were during this game. Overall, we played extremely poorly. We turned the ball over far too much, did a poor job of guarding, and were outworked on the boards. Shots did not fall for us today, and we were not able to get second chance opportunities because we did not do a good job of crashing the boards."
The Lady Wolves started the game strong by outscoring the Lady Bengals 16-15 in the first quarter and holding a lead by that margin. However, that was the only quarter that the Lady Wolves won in the matchup as the Lady Bengals rebounded and outscored them, 19-15, in the second quarter. The Lady Bengals held a slim 34-32 lead over the Lady Wolves as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.
The Lady Bengals then added 17 points in the third and fourth quarters each while holding the Lady Wolves to nine points in the third and 13 in the fourth to earn the 68-54 win.
Angel Wilkinson (Brookhaven) led the way for the Lady Wolves as she posted a double-double sharing the game lead in points with 21 and leading all players in rebounds with 12 along with three assists and four steals. Kaylee Johnson (Booneville) had 13 points with four rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
"Kaylee Johnson was very good today," stated Stephens. "She steadied us against their pressure and converted on open looks."
Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) and Amari Barnes (Tylertown) had five points each, Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) had three points, while Jamyria Robinson (St. Martin) and Kiersten Haynes (Clinton) had three points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.
Co-Lin is now 10-4 overall and will return to action hosting Baton Rouge on Thursday, January 9. Tip-off between the Lady Bears and the Lady Wolves is set for 5:30 p.m., at Mullen Gym in Wesson.
"I am proud of what this group has accomplished in the first half of the season," added Stephens. "I am looking forward to continuing to see them grow and improve when we return to play in January."
