Lady Wolves Survive Thriller Against Lady Tigers

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team resumed MACCC play by hosting Coahoma on Saturday, February 7. The Lady Wolves and Lady Tigers went all the way to the wire to determine a winner as the Lady Wolves came out with a 63-62 victory.

The Lady Wolves opened the game with a 7-1 scoring run to hold a lead by that margin with 5:54 left to play. The Lady Tigers responded with a 6-4 scoring run to close out the quarter, but the Lady Wolves held an 11-7 lead. The second quarter saw the Lady Wolves start with a 7-5 scoring run pushing their lead to 18-12 with 7:25 left to play. The teams matched scoring totals with five points over the next few minutes as the Lady Wolves maintained their lead at 23-17 with 3:45 remaining in the second quarter. The Lady Wolves then closed out the first half with a 7-2 scoring run to increase their lead to 30-19 as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

The Lady Tigers opened the third quarter and second half with a 7-5 scoring run as they cut the lead down to 35-26 with 7:43 left on the clock. However, the Lady Wolves responded with a 7-6 scoring run to push their lead to 42-32 with 3:57 left. The Lady Tigers then closed out the quarter with an 8-3 scoring run, but the Lady Wolves held the lead at 45-40 heading to the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter started with an offensive flurry by the Lady Wolves as they went on a 9-3 scoring run to grow their lead to 54-43 with 8:02 left to play. The Lady Tigers responded with a 11-5 scoring run cutting the Lady Wolves lead down to 59-54 with 4:02 remaining. The Lady Tigers then went on a 7-2 scoring run as the Lady Wolves lead stood at 62-61 with 1:30 left in the game. Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) then drew a foul with 32 seconds remaining to push the lead to 63-61. The Lady Wolves were then called for a foul sending the Lady Tigers to the free throw line with nine seconds left. The Lady Tigers went 1-for-2 at the line, but grabbed the offensive rebound on the missed second shot and had a potential game-winning layup attempt that went wide while Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) snatched a final defensive rebound to seal the 63-62 victory for the Lady Wolves.

Kamaiyah Pruitt led the way for the Lady Wolves as she posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Eymani Key had 13 points with two rebounds and seven assists. Akeelah Hobson (Oakdale, LA) had nine points with two rebounds and one assist.

Zion Nelson (Byram) and Tyra Johnson (Morton) had six points each while Nelson added four rebounds and two assists and Johnson had one rebound and one assist. Maddison Mitchell (Baton Rouge, LA) and Amari Barnes (Tylertown) had five points each while Jalynn Applewhite (Gulfport) had three points and six blocks with Jamyria Robinson (St. Martin) had two points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin improves to 12-5 overall, 4-2 in MACCC play, and will return to action on the road against Pearl River on Monday, February 9. Tip-off between the Lady Wolves and the Wildcats is set for 5:30 p.m., at Marvin R. White Coliseum in Poplarville.
