Tennis Sweeps East Central in Conference Opener

WESSON, Miss. – The Co-Lin men's and women's tennis teams opened MACCC play hosting East Central on Friday, February 20. For the second time this week, both teams swept the day, with the Wolves earning a dominant 9-0 victory and the Lady Wolves securing a 6-3 win.

MEN'S MATCH

In men's doubles, the Wolves swept all three matches. Nikoloz Gurgenidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Jake Bucek (Geelong, Australia) earned an 8-3 win at one doubles. Nick Tozer (Belrose, Australia) and Jax Leggett (Bogue Chitto) secured an 8-4 victory at two doubles, while James Rooks (Jackson) and Lane Breland (Perkinston) completed the sweep with an 8-2 win at three doubles.

In singles action, the Wolves also swept all six matches, extending their singles winning streak to 18 on the week with victories over Millsaps and Hinds. Gurgenidze earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at one singles, and Tozer followed with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at two singles. Bucek picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at three singles. Rooks added a 7-5, 6-4 victory at four singles, Mason Brand earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at five singles, and Leggett closed out the day with a 6-4, 6-0 win at six singles.

WOMEN'S MATCH

In the women's match, the Lady Wolves claimed all three doubles points. Georgina Labusch (Verl, Germany) and Ruri Takeuchi (Chiba, Japan) earned a 9-7 win at one doubles. Domenica Gruezo (Quito, Ecuador) and Ady Locke (Brookhaven) followed with an 8-2 victory at two doubles, while Allie Grace McNeill (Brookhaven) and Clara Barton Calcote (Wesson) completed the sweep with an 8-2 win at three doubles.

In singles play, the Lady Wolves won three of six matches. Takeuchi fell at one singles, 3-6, 0-6, while Labusch dropped her match at two singles, 1-6, 1-6. Gruezo fell at three singles, 3-6, 2-6. Locke earned a 7-5, 6-0 win at four singles, and Calcote followed with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at five singles. Ella Thompson (Brookhaven) secured the final point with a 6-0, 6-0 win at six singles to give the Lady Wolves the 6-3 victory.

With the wins, the Wolves and Lady Wolves improve to 2-0 on the season, 1-0 in MACCC play and will return to action on Tuesday, February 24, facing off against Gulf Coast in Perkintson.
