Lady Wolves Wrap Up Historic Season with National Tournament Run

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Tennis team recently completed a historic season which featured the highest finish at a national tournament in program history.

The Lady Wolves finished the season 12-4 and won their first seven matches in a row to start the season. The Lady Wolves also went 8-1 in MACCC play with their lone loss coming against Jones to finish second in the MACCC earning the No. 2 seed in the Region 23 Tournament. In that tournament, the Lady Wolves made a run all the way to the championship game by beating rival Southwest, 5-0, and then Gulf Coast in the semifinals, 5-3, before falling to Jones, 5-0, in the championship. The Region 23 Runner Up finish earned the Lady Wolves an automatic berth in the Division II National Tournament in Sumter, South Carolina.

Ruri Takeuchi (Chiba, Japan) earned All-MACCC First Team and was Singles Runner Up in the MACCC.

At the national tournament, the doubles pairing of Takeuchi and Georgina Labusch made it to the semifinals in the No. 1 Doubles position to earn national semifinalist honors. Takeuchi and Ella Thompson (Brookhaven) made it to the finals of the No. 1 Singles and No. 6 Singles flights both earning national finalist and runner-up honors. Takeuchi and Thompson were also named NJCAA Second Team All-Americans after their performances at the national tournament.

The Lady Wolves finish the season with 11 victories over Top-25 teams while assistant coach Brenda Smith was named the Region III Women's Assistant Coach of the Year. Takeuchi is also sitting at No. 10 in the National JUCO Singles rankings while her and Labusch are No. 12 in the National JUCO Doubles ranking. That pairing was also an ITA Fall Regional Doubles Semifinalist while Takeuchi was also an ITA Fall Regional Singles Semifinalist.
