Wolves Split Road Doubleheader with Indians
FULTON – The Co-Lin Baseball team hit the road to face off against Itawamba on Saturday, April 11. The Wolves and Indians split the day with the Wolves taking game one, 21-13, and the Indians taking game two, 8-4.
GAME ONE
The Wolves took control of the game early as they scored six runs in the top of the first as Bryson Jones (Brandon) and Donovan Moore (Roxie) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Trey Davdison (Brandon) and Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) then hit back-to-back RBI singles scoring Jones and Moore giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead. John Mark Grissom (Pearl) and Caleb Brooks (Brandon) then hit two more back-to-back RBI singles scoring Davidson and Moore extending the lead to 4-0. Later in the inning, Brady White (Ethel) hit a two-RBI single scoring Grissom and Brooks making the score, 6-0.
The Indians responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first cutting the lead down to 6-2. However, the Wolves answered with a pair of back-to-back solo home runs as Moore and Davidson led off the top of the second with the pair of hits on back-to-back pitches making the score, 8-2. The Indians then plated three runs in the bottom of the second cutting the lead down to 8-5. The Indians then scored one run in the bottom of the third making the score, 8-6.
The Wolves added one run in the top of the fourth as Jones and Moore drew back-to-back walks while Davidson singled to load the bases with no outs. Later in the inning, Jones scored on a sacrifice fly by Grissom increasing the lead to 9-6. The Indians then scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth cutting the lead down to 9-8.
The Wolves added one run in the top of the fifth as Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) and White drew back-to-back walks to put two runners on with no outs to start the inning. Later in the inning, Griffin scored on an RBI-single by Jones increasing the lead to 10-8. The Wolves then added two runs in the top of the sixth as Hanlon hit a one-out double and then scored on an RBI-single by Grissom. Later in the inning, Grissom scored on an RBI-single by White making the lead, 12-8.
The Indians then scored five in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by a pair of home runs to take a 13-12 lead. The lead was short lived though as the Wolves scored four runs in the top of the seventh as Jones hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Later in the inning, Davidson was intentionally walked while Hanlon then drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Grissom then crushed a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left field for a grand slam to give the Wolves a 16-13 lead.
The Wolves added a pair of runs in the eighth as Bryan Travis (Gulfport) hit a one-out single and later scored on an RBI-double by Moore. Moore then scored on an RBI-single by Davidson increasing the lead to 18-13. The final three runs for the Wolves came in the top of the ninth as Grissom hit a leadoff double to get the offense started. Later in the inning, Griffin drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. White then ambushed and smashed the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a three-run home run making the lead, 21-13.
The Indians were then retired in order all via strikeouts to secure the game one victory for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled 19 hits as a team with Trey Davidson and John Mark Grissom had four hits each while Brady White had three hits with Bryson Jones, Dononvan Moore, and Bradley Hanlon having two hits apiece while Caleb Brooks and Bryan Travis had one hit each. Grissom led the Wolves in RBIs with seven while White had six with Davidson adding three, Moore adding two, while Jones, Hanlon, and Brooks had one RBI each.
Tanner Blackwell (Flora) got the start and earned a no-decision while pitching 3.2 innings and allowing eight runs, five earned, on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts while Lucian Walker (Starkville) pitched 0.1 innings of relief allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits. Caleb Flynn (Laurel) picked up the win (2-0) while pitching 0.2 innings of scoreless relief with one hit and one strikeout. Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) picked up his second save of the season while pitching three innings of hitless and scoreless relief with four strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The Wolves got on the board as Donovan Moore crushed a 0-1 over the fence in left field for a solo home run to take an early 1-0 lead. The Wolves then added a run in the top of the second as John Mark Grissom hit a leadoff triple and later scored increasing the lead to 2-0.
The Indians then responded with a one in the bottom half cutting the lead down to 2-1. The Wolves answered with two runs in the top of the third as Bryson Jones (Brandon) hit a one-out single to get the offense going. Moore then smashed a 0-2 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run increasing the lead to 4-1.
The Indians then added one run in the fourth cutting the lead down to 4-2. The Indians then plated six runs in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead over the Wolves. The Wolves were then retired in order in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to seal the game two win for the Indians.
The Wolves totaled six hits as Donovan Moore led the way going 3-for-3 while Bryson Jones, John Mark Grissom and Bryan Travis had one hit each. Moore led the team in RBIs with three.
Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) got the start and took the loss (4-3) while pitching four innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Akavion Griffith (Magee) pitched two innings of relief allowing two unearned runs on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
Co-Lin is now 25-16 overall, 10-8 in MACCC play and will return to action hosting Gulf Coast on Tuesday, April 14. First pitch between the No. 24 Bulldogs and the No. 23 Wolves is set for 3 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
