PERKINSTON, Miss. – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves outlasted the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs Thursday night as Co-Lin squeezed by with a 68-67 win. Jonathan Floyd, a sophomore from Gulfport, rattled home two free throws with 0.4 seconds on the clock to secure the one point victory. The win moves the Wolves to 10-1 on the year and 1-1 in the MACJC South Division. Gulf falls to 8-3 on the year and 1-1 in division play. Co-Lin takes the floor again Tuesday, January 16 as the Wolves travel to Utica to face the Hinds Bulldogs.
Both teams had their ups and downs throughout the very physical contest. The Bulldogs opened the game with a 10-2 run and looked to run away with the game. However, the Wolves, led by sophomore Mike McWilliams, fired off a 15-0 run midway through the opening half to take a 25-18 lead. The offensive burst came from several trips to the free throw line, and some big three-pointers from Darrian Wilson. The Wolves hung on to the single-digit lead until final minute of the half when the Bulldogs took a one-point lead. Co-Lin trailed 33-32 going into the locker room.
In the second half action was back and forth until an 11-2 Co-Lin run gave the Wolves an eight-point lead with 10:46 remaining. Unfortunately, Gulf Coast quickly erased that lead and tied the game for the fourth time with 7:05 remaining. The lead continue to trade hands for the next several minutes until the Bulldogs took a two-point lead, 65-63, after a pair of free throws with 1:11 left in the contest. On the next possession Floyd drilled a corner three-pointer to give the Wolves a 66-65 lead. Gulf Coast continued to battle as Keevon Oney drove into the paint and scored with four seconds remaining, once again giving Gulf Coast the lead, 67-66. Without any timeouts Co-Lin quickly took the ball down the floor where Floyd was fouled resulting in a one-and-one free throw. The Harrison Central graduate rattled both in and gave the Wolves a 68-67 victory.
The lead changed hands 14 times throughout the game with eight of those lead changes happening in the final seven minutes of play.
Floyd and Wilson led the Wolves in the scoring column with 12 points each, and Youry White netted 11. White also led the Wolves in rebounds with eight, while Anthony Jones brought down six boards. Damarius Brooks led Co-Lin with five assists on the night.
Abdul Dial and Dedoch Chan led Gulf Coast with 14 points apiece. Chan posted a double-double as he also led the Bulldogs with 14 rebounds. LaRaymond Spivey posted five assists for Gulf Coast.
Co-Lin shot 37 percent (22-for-60) from the field, 35 percent (9-for-26) from the three-point line, and 71 percent (15-for-21) from the foul stripe. Gulf Coast shot 36 percent (24-for-66) from the field, 36 percent (5-for-14) from beyond the arc, and 61 percent (14-for-23) from the free throw line.
